Stop Press: Face masks recommended
##Last year SNCF stopped issuing full-sized TGV or Intercity tickets at self-service machines, replacing them with a ‘facturette’ similar to a till receipt, which shows the passenger’s name, seat number and a QR code for scanning by the train conductor.
From January 2023 individual stamping machines (above right) which validated tickets are being phased out. Today tickets are valid for the day of travel, rather than for two months in the past which meant they needed to be validated to stop multiple usage.
Customers who still have paper tickets need to inform the conductor when boarding the train to have the ticket validated. If not, the conductor will remind passengers of the procedure when he or she passes through the carriages.
##The French railway has an app called SNCF Connect. Passengers are able to search for routes, buy tickets, combine train and coach tickets, hire an Avis car, book a taxi, read traffic updates, manage bookings and ticketing. The app can be viewed in English. For rival train companies, eg Trenitalia, you will need to use Trainline. International travel by train can be viewed on Connect but tickets cannot be bought online. Ninety nine per cent of tickets are now digitalised says SNCF.
##If you need help with luggage you can ask for assistance - including wheelchairs - at the information desk in the Cannes station. Allow extra time
Handicapped and reduced mobility passengers can be dropped off outside the Cannes railway station.

Cannes Railway Station
Cannes railway station
The Cannes railway station has a drop off zone at the Voie Rapide, plus buses and taxis on its forecourt. There are shops, cafes, a fitness centre and a hotel attached to it.
If the lift from the drop off zone is not working go further along to the car park and take its lift. It's a few paces more but better than the steps. Strangely, the architect does seem to have included an awful lot of steps in his design.
To get to the platform, direction Italy, from the booking office go past the stairs onto the platform (direction Marseille) where you will find a lift to the lower floor, exit, walk a few paces and get another lift to platform 1. If you need assistance, there is an information point and disabled passengers can get help. Arrive early and try to inform them in advance if possible.

Travelling the Cote d'Azur
Useful Info: If the trains, for some reason, stop running there is a bus which runs along the coast between Menton and Nice.
The best way to travel the Cote d'Azur is by train. Local trains (TER) are efficient and normally on time but sadly there have been many strikes recently. Do try to avoid rush hours. Prices are reasonable, compared to Britain at least.
You can buy a one day travel ticket for just 13€ for all journeys in the Alpes-Maritimes. So you you can jump on and off whenever you want all day long. This ticket can also be used on the scenic Roya Valley railway from Nice. All tickets are available at Cannes station - it is recommended you book in advance where possible. And if you are very, very clever go to the French Railways site.
Mind you, if you think the TGV is fast have a look at what was achieved in 1953 in England. SEE FILM
