New 5* Hotel Opens 2024
The Chateau de Theoule has been transformed into a five star hotel which opens 8 March 2024. It boasts a spa, gastronomic restaurant and private beach. Room rates start at 360 euros low season to 920 high season. The chateau had been empty since 2015. It had previously been a holiday residence, owned by the works council of energy employees and the CGT union.
History of the Chateau
In 1630, a soap factory was built here by Marseilles merchants. After it was abandoned and fell into ruin, an elegant residence was built on its site and named “Le Château”. The castle was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century and transformed several times before taking on its final form around 1905. At the end of the 19th century, the castle belonged to Auguste FERROUILLAT, director of the Lyon Républicain newspaper and was sold in 1913 to Harry Crawford Leland of Langley18, a Scottish aristocrat, who completed the work. There are still some vestiges of the old soap factory in the basement
In summer from Cannes there is a ferry that runs to Theoule and on to Figueirette Port (below right), as well as a coast road bus and of course the train. There is also a free shuttle bus between Theoule and La Figueirette /Trayas.
Theoule's famous annual fish festival, Kermesse aux Poissons, starts 1 February and lasts until 17 March, 2024. Six local restaurants are offering a menu of eight dishes, six of which contain fish or seafood, a bottle of wine for two, mineral water and coffee. Restos taking part: Les Voiles de Theoule (64 euros), La Marea (89), Le Bistro de Lerins (62), Le Coup d' Fourchette (65), Comme a la Maison (68) and Chez Philippe (70). Booking is essential and do state it's for the Kermesse.
Wonderful Beaches
For a change of beach scenery visit Theoule. In summer you can take a ferry from Cannes to Theoule. It drops you off on the west side of the town centre so you can walk in either direction and find beaches and restaurants. If you get seasick take the bus or the train. Théoule is just three stops from Cannes on the St Raphael train, taking about 12 minutes.
On leaving the station turn right down the hill - a bit of a walk - before turning left to the first beach and the marina. Here you find a lovely public beach with safe swimming (no jelly fish) and lifeguards on duty mid June to mid September.
There is an excellent beach restaurant called Chez Philippe offering à la carte for lunch as well as a bar and snack bar. At weekends groups of people picnic on the beach. And you can always try to join in a game of boules on the beach – no charge.
In the Marina you will see the traditional painted Provencal jousting boats. The Theoule teams are formidable foes and "jousts" take place throughout the summer.
A walk around the marina brings you to another public beach and the private beach Magellan. There are lots of restaurants and snack bars to choose from as you walk the coast – only 10 minutes max from Chez Philippe to the Marco Polo beach and restaurant in the town’s centre.
If you enjoy a stroll carry on round the bay. There are a number of walks including a complete circuit of the headland - L’Aiguille (its beaches left above) - taking about 1hr 15 mins. En route there is a beach and restaurant before you leave the coast.
In Théoule there’s a choice of water sports and boat hire is also available. If driving there is plenty of parking but it does get very busy in the height of the season - be warned.
The tourist office is at 2 av de la Corniche d'or and it has a "web corner" with computers and wifi connexion - and two loos. See www.theoule-sur-mer.org
