CANNES FILM FESTIVAL - PRESIDENT OF THE JURY 2024
Greta says of cinema: “I love films – I love making them, I love going to them, I love talking about them. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of movies can be. I am stunned and thrilled and humbled to be serving as the president of the Cannes Film Festival Jury. ”

“The Festival de Cannes has always held a special place in my heart. I was surprised and elated when my first film, THX-1138, was selected to be shown in a new program for first time directors called the Directors’ Fortnight. Since then, I have returned to the festival on many occasions in a variety of capacities as a writer, director and producer. I am truly honored by this special recognition which means a great deal to me.” George Lucas
He founded Industrial Light & Magic and helped develop many new visual technologies, including the computer-assisted camera. In sound, he contributed to the evolution of stereo through his company THX. He also founded the famous animation studio Pixar. |

“Forty years ago we founded Studio Ghibli with the desire to bring high-level, high-quality animated films to children and adults of all ages. Today, audiences around the world can see our films, and many visitors come to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka and Ghibli Park to experience the world of our films for themselves. We've come a long way from making Studio Ghibli this big. Although Miyazaki and I have aged, I am confident that Studio Ghibli will continue to take on new challenges, led by teams who will carry on the spirit of the company. I would be delighted if you continue to be interested in our achievements..." Toshio Suzuki

THE IMMERSIVE EXPLAINED
This new competition is organized with the support of the National Centre for Cinema and Animated Images (CNC). It will highlight immersive, collective, interactive narrative works which use virtual and augmented reality technologies.
For this first edition, eight immersive works will be selected by a committee of industry professionals and members of the Festival team. A selection of non-competitive works, exposing the links between immersive experience and cinema will complete the system.
These works will finally compete for the Best Immersive Work Prize which will be awarded by an international jury composed of well-known personalities from cinema and immersive art.
In 2017, Alejandro González Iñárritu showed at the Cannes Film Festival his work in Virtual Reality entitled Carne y Arena (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible ) which will go down in history as the first immersive work ever presented in the official selection at a major festival. He received a special Oscar for this work. Iñárritu is often invited to Cannes and he was President of the jury in 2019.

Directors Fortnight 2024
The 2024 poster (left) is based on a painting by Japanese filmmaker, actor, writer, comedian and painter... Takeshi Kitano.
He is behind nearly 20 films including Kids Return which was screened in La Quinzaine in 1996. Naïve, playful and clownish, his work invites us to marvel and not take ourselves too seriously. The choice of this offbeat painting as the emblem of the 2024 edition is a way of paying tribute to the poetry and humor so precious of its cinema.
Its graphic design is by Michel Welfringer.
You can buy an individual ticket (8 euros) from the headquarters at the corner of rue Amouretti and rue du Medecin Lt Betrand Lepine open from 13-24 May 8.15am to 7pm.

On the red carpet...
Sixty meters of red carpet are used to cover the famous 24 steps at the Palais des Festivals. In the past the carpet was changed three times a day during the festival with a total of 2km used. In 2021 this was cut by 50% and only one km was used to help save the planet.
The president of the festival Iris Knobloch - the first female president in the Festival's history and former boss of WarnerMedia - greets the stars and other guests at the top of the steps. She is joined by the mayor of Cannes, currently David Lisnard
