Supermarkets charge for carrier bags - so keep them and remember to take them with you when you go shopping
The size of supermarkets is controlled in town centres so most are located on the edge of town. Centrally you can find Monoprix department store which has a good food section on the first floor. It is also open on Sundays and is opposite the railway station. They also do home deliveries - do your shopping as normal and go to the special home delivery check out. Insider Tip - take note of sell by dates, especially if price reduced. There are also mini Monoprix(Monops) near Gambetta market on the corner of rue Hoche and at Forville market. Carrefour Market supermarket is in the rue Meynadier and you can park free for a couple of hours (entry off the bd de la Ferrage) if you spend at least 25 euros in-store - rather slow at the checkout. There are a number of mini markets such Petit Casino (bit pricey) in the town centre. Did you know... It's illegal to sell alcohol after 10pm at night. So shop early for booze. The nearest major supermarket is Intermarche off the bd Alsace, running parallel and below the Voie Rapide, at the eastern end. This is the supermarket favoured by those who live in the Californie district - Cannes' number one residential area. Lots of parking on the roof. Did you know... caviar is Vat taxed as a luxury at 19.6% but foie gras and truffles are only taxed at 5.5%. |
HATE SHOPPING? Order on-line from Chronodrive in La Bocca, part of Auchan group. They will deliver to your home a couple of hours later or you can pick it up at the warehouse.
You need one euro coins for the big trolleys in all supermarkets. North of Cannes, actually in Le Cannet, is Leclerc hypermarket, av Roosevelt. Number 2 bus, direction Blanchisserie, takes you there. Parking on the ground floor and on the roof. Cheap (usually) Leclerc petrol station as well. Always very busy but it has a cafe and restaurant if you need sustenance. Post box, photo booth and cash machine also available, as well as a paper shop. Most of the Cannes supermarkets are to be found in La Bocca. Drive through La Bocca past the market and at the roundabout you will find two major stores Auchan and Intermarche both with petrol stations. If you carry on towards Mandelieu you come to Carrefour Market, again with a petrol station. It is actually located at the beginning of a large out of town shopping area called Les Tourrades - on both sides of the main road. Go right round the next roundabout(ie turn back on yourself) and immediately after the roundabout turn into the shopping area. You will see Darty (major electrical store) and behind it you will find a large Asian supermarket. Its frozen section is marvellous for dumplings and spring rolls. |

For real Insiders' Knowledge there is a cluster of supermarkets in north La Bocca well worth searching out - take the number 1 or 2 bus. First is Contact which has an excellent fruit and veg section. Lidl Cannes
A short drive round the corner from Contact to av Michel Jourdan, direction Ranguin, is Lidl (buy a tin of foie gras) and around the back of Lidl is the greatest find - Grand Frais. (see picture below)
This is like a covered market and has the most amazing selection of fruit and veg - including exotics. It is not unusual to see Asian restaurateurs stocking up here. It has a good range of meats, including halal. The deli counter is mouthwatering - try the sweet marinated garlic and the tapenade (a green or black olive spread) delicious on toast. Carry on up the main road and turn right at the junction and left at the roundabout - here you find the newest Leclerc hypermarket, petrol station, post office etc. LeclercA personal favorite for good regional wines and special offers.

Since Brexit the availability of English foodstuffs in French supermarkets has been dramatically reduced. You can still find English marmalade, baked beans, brown sauce, teas and Carr's water biscuits.. But these are for example in Leclerc Rocheville to be found among the normal shelves and not in the world food section. Ask for help or just hunt
